The Minister for Health, Sussan Ley, recently called upon the public to get the new and improved flu vaccine, which is available from the 20th April 2015. At Periocare we feel strongly about protecting our staff from possible influenza infection and provide the updated vaccination annually at the workplace.

Could Periodontitis be in the genes?

Posted in FAQs, News and Updates, Out and About on .

Studies suggest that up to 50% of periodontitis cases can be attributed to genetic influences. As such, people can be susceptible to periodontitis inherited from one’s parents, and the condition can run in families. This destructive reaction to plaque accumulation is also influenced by the body’s immune response. Anything which suppresses your immune response has the potential to accelerate periodontal destruction. Smoking suppresses the immune response, and numerous studies show far more gum disease destruction in smokers, similarly diabetes will exaggerate the destructive response to plaque. Other influences of periodontal diseases include; puberty, pregnancy, stress and some medications.Genetics picContinue Reading

Melissa teams up with Youngcare

Posted in News and Updates, Out and About on .

Melissa Coles (Treatment Coordinator) volunteered her time on Friday 20th March to support Youngcare’s Brisbane Budgie Bolt!

Brave blokes and gutsy gals run six kilometres from the Cultural Forecourt at Southbank in budgy smugglers or smugglettes to help create choice, independence, and dignity for young Aussies with high care needs. Because no matter how uncomfortable you might feel running in your budgies, it’s not nearly as uncomfortable as being a young person in aged care.

Well done Mel!
