Studies suggest that up to 50% of periodontitis cases can be attributed to genetic influences. As such, people can be susceptible to periodontitis inherited from one’s parents, and the condition can run in families. This destructive reaction to plaque accumulation is also influenced by the body’s immune response. Anything which suppresses your immune response has the potential to accelerate periodontal destruction. Smoking suppresses the immune response, and numerous studies show far more gum disease destruction in smokers, similarly diabetes will exaggerate the destructive response to plaque. Rachel and her teammates; Sue Kelley, Sue Boulton and sister Ros Allison, joined forces under team Girls Trekking Adventures Northcote and ran 55km last weekend in support of The Fred Hollows Foundation.
Established in 2010, the Wild Women on Top Sydney Coastrek is a 55km team challenge, commencing at sunrise on Coogee Breach with the finish line at Balmoral. Teams must complete the challenge in less than 18 hours.

Meet Jeremy! Jeremy is one of our dedicated and very talented periodontal hygienists. He joined Periocare in 2007 when the new 800 Gympie Rd premises opened. He graduated from the University of Queensland in 2000 with a B.Applied HSc (Oral Health). Jeremy has over 12 years experience working in general dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics and specialist HIV/Oncology Dental Hospital services (St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney). Jeremy is a proud member of the Dental Hygienists’ Association (Qld). In his spare time, Jeremy enjoys competitive road cycling and watching rugby.

Peter is back on deck following his participation in the Ride for Recovery in Tassie last week!
It was a very successful ride, raising in excess of $130,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation and the Myeloma Foundation. Funds raised will continue to support the awareness of blood cancers in Australia and raise funds for blood cancer patient services.

Last year we ran a story about one of our past dental assistants, Elizabeth Eastwell, who left Periocare in 2012 to pursue a career in nursing. Elizabeth secured a clinical placement opportunity overseas with Antipodeans Abroad and travelled to Laos in January 2015. Periocare proudly donated a range of dental products and educational models to assist Elizabeth and her colleagues in facilitating dental / oral health education programs in the villages she was to visit.
